Of the musical instruments commonly played in Kurdistan, daf is given a particular significance due to its applications in performances at reverenced places like khanqahs. Traditional techniques have often been used to instruct how to play daf as the instructors are not familiar with the science of music and musicology. This has resulted in disagreements and mixed techniques used by individual instructors who view their own teaching technique as the frame of reference, confusing learners and leaving them in doubt about which technique should be followed. Therefore, the main research question was formulated as: In playing daf according to the school of khanqah, what are the techniques used for playing and instructing, and how can one develop a scientific, comprehensive, unified technique to teach how to play daf? In terms of its objective, the present study is an applied one using a descriptive-analytical research method. The data were gathered through desk research and field studies (interviews with daf players). By examining different techniques used in Sanandaj school of khanqah and identifying what these techniques have in common and how they differ, a technique was presented for playing daf to be used by those interested in this learning how to play this musical instrument. Important results of this study include a correct performance with no significant side effects for daf players and a harmonized system of notes and nomenclature for recording strikes.
The statistical population consisted of distinguished instructors and players, including Seyed Ata’ollah Salamieh, Mohammad Farzad Andalibi, Mehrdad Karim Khavari, Ahmad Khaktinant, Mansour Moradi, Seyed Bahaoddin Hossein in Sanandaj, selected through non-probability sampling for a study of their work and their playing techniques.
