Introduction: Sleep disorders are among the most common problems of the elderly. Guided imagery is a non-pharmacological treatment that can be effective in treating these problems and improving the health status of the elderly. The purpose of this research was to determine the effect of guided imagery on sleep quality and general health in elderly suffering from sleep disorders.
Methods: This research was an interventional study with an intervention and a control group, which was conducted in the elderly who referred to the health centers of Ardabil city in 1400. The current study recruited 70 elderly patients who met the inclusion criteria, including over 60 years old, through convenience sampling method and were randomly allocated to the intervention and control groups after obtaining informed consent. Pittsburgh sleep quality index and Goldberg general health questionnaires were used before and after the intervention for data collection. The control group received the routine care and the intervention group received the guided imagery audio file. Data analysis was done by SPSS 22.
Results: There was no significant difference between the mean score in sleep quality and general health in the intervention and the control group before the intervention (p>0.05). There was a statistically significant difference between the mean score of two groups in sleep quality (p≤0.001) and general health ( p≤0.05) (except for depression symptoms and social function).
Conclusion: Guided imagery is efficient in improving sleep quality and general health of the elderly with sleep disorders and can be used as an effective non-pharmacological nursing and health intervention.
