Why do national literary histories adopt an identical attitude towards women authors by giving them the least possible place? To propose some answers, we chose two women poets from two completely different cultures, French and Iranian: Constance de Salm (1767-1845) and Âlamtâj (Jâleh) Qâem-Maqâmi (1883-1947). The thematic and aesthetic study of their poems written and published in two societies in transition towards political modernity, shows that despite cultural and temporal differences, these writers advance the same claims against the patriarchal order, which, at the dawn of democracy struggles to accept women outside the private sphere, in roles other than those of wife and mother, thus excluding them from history. Moreover, it seems that the socialization of women within gendered ideologies pushes them to aesthetic choices which, confining them to literary archaism, excludes them from aesthetic modernity and, moreover, from literary history
